Biographical Record

Gordon Edward Pinsent was a national cultural icon of Canada. Leaving Newfoundland as a young man to pursue acting, Pinsent became a cornerstone of Canadian theatre, television, and film, starring in The Forest Rangers and creating and starring in the classic film The Rowdyman (1972).

In 2006, Pinsent gave a tour-de-force dramatic performance opposite Julie Christie in Sarah Polley's Away from Her, winning the Genie Award for Best Actor. Celebrated for his gravelly voice, humor, and poetic warmth, Pinsent was a Companion of the Order of Canada and received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement.
