Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba (1453–1515) transformed Renaissance warfare during the Italian Wars. Analyzing his defeat against French heavy cavalry at Seminara (1495), he integrated field entrenchments, disciplined pikemen, and massed gunpowder arquebus infantry.
At the Battle of Cerignola (1503)—widely considered the first battle in history won by gunpowder firearms—and the Battle of the Garigliano, his innovations expelled the French from Naples, inaugurating Spanish military hegemony across Europe.
