Archival Overview
Carthaginian general who commanded the garrison of Lilybaeum during the First Punic War and courageously attempted to negotiate peaceful payment with mutinous mercenary armies.
Biographical Record
Gisgo held the fortress of Lilybaeum against Roman sieges until the conclusion of the First Punic War in 241 BCE. Beloved by his soldiers for his fairness and integrity, he was selected by the Carthaginian Senate to conduct the repatriation of the mercenary forces to North Africa.
When radical rebel leaders Spendius and Mathos incited the Mercenary War, Gisgo bravely entered their camp unarmed to disburse promised back-pay. Betrayed and imprisoned, he was brutally executed by rebel fanatics in 239 BCE.
