Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498 CE) entered the Dominican Order in Bologna, rising to become prior of the convent of San Marco in Renaissance Florence.

Following the expulsion of the Medici in 1494, he established a democratic Christian commonwealth in Florence, burning pagan art and luxury items until papal excommunication brought his execution.
