Biographical Record
Giorgio Napolitano (1925–2023) was an esteemed elder statesman of the Italian Republic. Joining the anti-fascist resistance during World War II, Napolitano was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1953 as a member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), where he led the reformist \"Migliorista\" wing that steered the party away from Soviet orthodoxy toward European social democracy.
He served as President of the Chamber of Deputies (1992–1994) and as Minister of the Interior (1996–1998) before his election as President of Italy in 2006. During the height of the 2011 European sovereign debt crisis, Napolitano demonstrated decisive leadership, steering the appointment of Mario Monti's technocratic government to avoid sovereign insolvency.
In 2013, amid political deadlock, parliament re-elected him to a second term—an unprecedented event in Italian history—earning him the affectionate moniker \"King George\" for his moral authority.
