Biographical Record
Gichin Funakoshi was born in the Ryukyu Kingdom on Okinawa and trained from childhood in secret under masters Anko Asato and Anko Itosu. A schoolteacher by profession, he recognized karate's immense value for physical education, character development, and spiritual discipline.
In 1922, Funakoshi was invited to Tokyo to give the first public demonstration of karate on the Japanese mainland. He adapted the martial art into modern 'Karatedo' (Way of the Empty Hand) and authored the twenty guiding precepts (Niju Kun), founding the Shotokan school.
