Archival Overview

Beloved Italian football striker and manager who formed the "Goal Twins" partnership with Roberto Mancini at Sampdoria, captained Juventus to Champions League glory in 1996, won European trophies managing Chelsea, and guided Italy to triumph at Euro 2020.

Biographical Record

Gianluca Vialli was born into wealth in Cremona, Lombardy, the son of a self-made millionaire, growing up in the 60-room Castello di Belgioioso. Beginning his professional career with local club Cremonese, he transferred to Sampdoria in 1984. Forming an immortal attacking partnership with Roberto Mancini dubbed "I Gemelli del Gol" (The Goal Twins), Vialli led Sampdoria to their first and only Serie A title in 1991, three Coppa Italias, and the 1990 European Cup Winners' Cup.

In 1992, Vialli joined Juventus for a world-record fee, winning the UEFA Cup in 1993 and captaining the Bianconeri to UEFA Champions League glory in 1996. Moving to Chelsea, he became the first Italian to manage in the Premier League, leading Chelsea to the FA Cup, League Cup, and European Cup Winners' Cup. In 2019, despite battling pancreatic cancer, he reunited with Mancini as delegation chief for the Italy national team, famously weeping in embrace on the Wembley pitch after Italy won UEFA Euro 2020.
