Biographical Record
Giacomo Balla was an esteemed divisionist teacher in Rome (mentoring Boccioni and Severini) before signing the Futurist Manifesto. Fascinated by Etienne-Jules Marey's chronophotography and optical science, Balla sought to depict the physical sensation of speed and elapsed time on a static canvas.
Works like 'Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash' (1912) and 'Speed of an Automobile + Lights' captured moving legs, spinning wheels, and luminous streetlamps in strobes of repetitive motion. In 1915, he co-authored the 'Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe', expanding Futurist aesthetics into furniture, fashion, and theater.
