Biographical Record
Gholam-Hossein Banan was born into an aristocratic musical family in Tehran and studied vocal radif under Mirza Taher Ziaozakerin and Morteza Neydavoud. Joining Radio Iran at its inception in 1942, his velvety, warm baritone and effortless microtonal control quickly established him as the premier male singer of the realm.
Banan was the premier star of the legendary Golha (Flowers) radio program under Davood Pirnia, collaborating with composers Ruhollah Khaleqi and Morteza Mahjoubi. His immortal recordings of 'Ey Iran', 'Karavan' (The Caravan), and 'Elahe-ye Naz' (Goddess of Grace) are celebrated as the pinnacle of Persian vocal elegance and emotional subtlety.
