Archival Overview
Roman Emperor who ruled jointly with his father Septimius Severus and elder brother Caracalla from 209 to 211 CE before falling victim to dynastic rivalry in their mother Julia Domna's apartments.
Biographical Record
Geta was elevated to Augustus in 209 CE during the imperial campaigns in Britain. Upon their father's death at York, Geta and Caracalla returned to Rome as bitter co-emperors whose mutual hostility paralyzed imperial governance.
Despite plans to divide the Roman world between an eastern capital in Antioch and a western capital in Rome, Geta was murdered by Caracalla's centurions in December 211 CE. His death was followed by a comprehensive damnatio memoriae, expunging his name from monuments across the Roman world.
