"Through justice in counsel and courage in the field, he restored Carthage to the empire."

Archival Overview

Nephew of Emperor Justinian dispatched to Carthage in 536 AD, whose brilliant victory at Scalae Veteres (near Béja) crushed the catastrophic Stotzas military rebellion and saved Byzantine Africa.

Biographical Record

Germanus was a cousin and supreme general of Emperor Justinian. In 536 AD, the Byzantine army in Africa mutinied under the rebel Stotzas, seizing control of Carthage and joining forces with Vandal remnants.

Arriving in Carthage with minimal reinforcements, Germanus won over mutinous troops through justice and back-pay, then marched against Stotzas. In 537 AD, at the Battle of Scalae Veteres (near modern Béja), Germanus won a decisive victory, killing the rebel commanders and re-establishing imperial civilian order across Tunisia.
