Gerd Müller

Gerhard Müller was born in Nördlingen, Swabia, Germany. Joining TSV 1861 Nördlingen as a youth, his stocky build and thick thighs earned him skepticism, with Bayern Munich coach Zlatko Čajkovski initially exclaiming: 'What am I supposed to do with a weightlifter?' However, Müller's unprecedented goalscoring rate quickly silenced doubters, prompting Čajkovski to rephrase his assessment to: 'Short, fat Müller, but my god, he scores!'

Müller transformed Bayern Munich from a regional Bavarian club into a global powerhouse alongside Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier. In fifteen seasons with Bayern, he scored an astronomical 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches—a record that still stands. In the 1971–72 season alone, he scored 40 Bundesliga goals and a total of 85 goals in the calendar year 1972 (a record that held for forty years until broken by Lionel Messi in 2012).

On the international stage, Müller was devastating. He won the Golden Boot at the 1970 World Cup with ten goals, captured the 1972 European Championship, and scored the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final against Johan Cruyff's Netherlands in Munich. Awarded the Ballon d'Or in 1970, Müller won three consecutive European Cups with Bayern Munich between 1974 and 1976, immortalized as Germany's ultimate 'Bomber der Nation'.
