Archival Overview
The last great master of the Bruges school of Early Netherlandish painting, famed for luminous color harmony, serene devotional panels, and poignant civic justice diptychs.
Biographical Record
Moving from the Northern Netherlands to Bruges in 1484, David joined the Guild of Saint Luke and studied the masterworks of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. He succeeded Memling as the city's leading painter, creating works of extraordinary chromatic brilliance and naturalistic landscape backgrounds.
His most celebrated civic masterpiece, The Judgement of Cambyses (1498) painted for the Bruges Town Hall, served as a stark moral warning against judicial corruption. His works bridged the medieval Flemish tradition with early Renaissance spatial perspective.
