Biographical Record
Geraldo Bessa-Victor was born on June 19, 1917, in Luanda into an educated assimilado family. After qualifying in law in Lisbon, he served as a legal consultant while producing an extensive body of poetry and literary criticism.
Bessa-Victor was a pioneer in introducing authentic Angolan themes and rhythms into Portuguese classical verse. His volumes Ecos Dispersos (1941) and Ao Som das Marimbas (1943) brought the sounds of the marimba and the musseques (slums) of Luanda into universal literature. His scholarly essays on 19th-century Angolan literature, including his studies of Cordeiro da Matta, remain foundational references for Lusophone African studies.
