Biographical Record

Georges Rawiri was born on November 30, 1932, in Lambarene, Moyen-Ogooue. Educated in France in telecommunications and broadcasting, he returned to Gabon in 1960 to create Radio Gabon.

Rawiri became one of the key architects of modern Gabon's diplomatic apparatus, serving continuously as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, and First Deputy Prime Minister. In 1997, upon the establishment of the bicameral parliament, he was elected the first President of the Senate of Gabon, serving until his death. A sensitive lyricist, his poetry collections, including Chants du métissage, celebrated the riverine forests of the Ogooue and Gabon's cultural harmony.
