"Science is wonderful; it allows us to see how nature behaves beyond the deceptive simplicity of appearances."

Archival Overview

Polish-born French physicist awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the multiwire proportional chamber, transforming particle physics.

Biographical Record

Georges Charpak was born in eastern Poland and moved to Paris with his family at age seven. During World War II, he joined the French Resistance, was arrested by the Vichy authorities, and survived imprisonment in the Dachau concentration camp. Following the liberation, he naturalized as a French citizen and studied nuclear physics under Frédéric Joliot-Curie at the Collège de France.

Joining CERN in Geneva in 1959, Charpak revolutionized experimental particle physics in 1968 by inventing the multiwire proportional chamber. This electronic device replaced slow photographic bubble chambers with computer-linked detector arrays capable of tracking millions of particle collisions per second. Later in life, he devoted significant energy to educational reform, launching the hands-on science program 'La main à la pâte' in primary schools.
