Archival Overview
Towering French twentieth-century painter who co-founded Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso between 1908 and 1914, invented the technique of papier collé (collage), and painted the celebrated Birds ceiling in the Louvre.
Biographical Record
Trained as a decorative house painter in Le Havre, Braque was initially a Fauve painter before Paul Cézanne's 1907 retrospective and Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon catalyzed a radical artistic revolution. In 1908, art critic Louis Vauxcelles described Braque's landscape of L'Estaque as 'full of little cubes', giving birth to the name Cubism.
Working in intimate daily communion with Picasso ('like two mountain climbers roped together'), Braque created Analytical and Synthetic Cubism and invented pasted paper collage (papier collé) in 1912 with Fruit Dish and Glass. In 1961, he became the first living artist in history to have a solo exhibition in the Louvre Museum.
