Biographical Record
George Pol Georghiou was born on September 22, 1901, into a prominent merchant family in Famagusta. After reading law at Middle Temple in London, Georghiou abandoned the legal profession at age forty to dedicate his life entirely to painting.
Working in dramatic expressionist oils with swirling Gothic-Byzantine perspectives, Georghiou created unforgettable masterpieces such as The Imprisoned Graves and Cyprus after the Rain. Praised by Sir Winston Churchill and Lawrence Durrell, his works hang in the Imperial War Museum in London and the State Gallery of Contemporary Art in Nicosia.
