Biographical Record
George Perkins Marsh (1801–1882) was an American diplomat, philologist, and polymath from Vermont universally recognized as America's first environmentalist. Educated at Dartmouth College, Marsh was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1843, where he drafted the legislation creating the Smithsonian Institution. He was appointed US Minister to the Ottoman Empire (1849–1854) and later served as the longest-tenured American diplomat in Europe as Minister to the newly unified Kingdom of Italy (1861–1882).
Observing the catastrophic ecological collapse, deforestation, and soil erosion around the Mediterranean basin, Marsh published his visionary masterpiece Man and Nature; or, Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action in 1864. Challenging the prevailing myth that nature's resources are inexhaustible, Marsh warned that human exploitation can disrupt ecological balances and cause civilization to collapse. His work directly inspired Gifford Pinchot, Theodore Roosevelt, and the establishment of the US National Forest System.
