George Herbert Leigh Mallory (1886–1924) was an iconic English mountaineer whose obsession with the summit of Mount Everest defined the heroic age of Himalayan exploration. When famously asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory famously replied: 'Because it's there.'
Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine vanished into the clouds high on the North East Ridge on June 8, 1924, just 800 feet below the summit. In 1999, Mallory's remarkably preserved body was discovered at 26,760 feet, leaving open mountaineering's greatest mystery: did they reach the summit 29 years before Hillary?
