"I tried to paint the world as it was: ugly, cruel, and hypocritical."

Archival Overview

German-American caricaturist and painter whose razor-sharp, satirical draughtsmanship savagely unmasked the militarism, corruption, and decadence of Weimar Germany.

Biographical Record

George Grosz anglicized his name during World War I as a protest against German nationalism. In postwar Berlin, he emerged as a leading figure of Berlin Dada and the Neue Sachlichkeit, deploying blistering satirical drawings and photomontages against bourgeois hypocrisy, war profiteers, and the burgeoning fascist threat.

His graphic portfolios, including 'Gott mit uns' and 'Ecce Homo', led to multiple trials for obscenity and blasphemy. Recognizing the impending Nazi catastrophe, Grosz emigrated to the United States in 1932, teaching at the Art Students League of New York and turning toward surrealistic landscapes and warning allegories.
