Archival Overview

Fiery and incorruptible Member of Parliament for Kitutu Masaba who was detained repeatedly without trial for demanding parliamentary accountability and multi-party democracy.

Biographical Record

George Moseti Anyona was born in 1945 in Kitutu Masaba, Kisii. Educated in political science and English at Makerere University, he was elected to the National Assembly in 1974 at age twenty-nine, quickly earning renown as one of the 'Seven Bearded Sisters'—a group of fearless radical backbenchers.

Detained without trial by Kenyatta in 1977 for investigating corrupt locomotive tenders, and detained again in 1982 by Moi for attempting to register a socialist opposition party, Anyona spent over eight years in maximum-security prisons. Refusing lucrative government appointments, he founded the Kenya Social Congress (KSC), serving as a beacon of uncompromising integrity until his death in a car crash in 2003.
