Archival Overview
Legendary Danish silversmith and sculptor whose Art Nouveau silver hollowware, jewelry, and flatware established Georg Jensen as one of the world's premier luxury design houses.
Biographical Record
Georg Arthur Jensen was born on August 31, 1866, in Radvaad near Copenhagen. Trained as a goldsmith and sculptor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts under Theobald Stein, he opened a humble silversmithing workshop at Bredgade 31 in Copenhagen in 1904.
Jensen's fluid, sculptural Art Nouveau silver designs—embellished with stylized flowers, grapes, and hammered lustrous surfaces—captivated international connoisseurs. He expanded with boutiques in Paris, London, and New York, collaborating with master artists like Johan Rohde and Harald Nielsen. The New York Times declared him 'the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years.'
