Archival Overview
First official Exarch of Africa (591–598 AD), who combined military and civil powers into the Exarchate of Carthage under Emperor Maurice, defeating Berber tribal federations and securing prosperity.
Biographical Record
Gennadius was appointed Master of Soldiers in Africa in 578 AD. Recognizing that decentralized administration left North Africa vulnerable, Emperor Maurice created the Exarchate of Carthage in 591 AD, uniting supreme civil and military authority in Gennadius as the first Exarch.
Gennadius governed from Carthage with exceptional administrative efficiency and diplomatic skill, defeating the powerful Moorish coalitions under Garmul and maintaining warm correspondence with Pope Gregory the Great. Under his rule, Carthage experienced an economic and architectural renaissance before his peaceful death around 600 AD.
