Biographical Record
A history student at the Sorbonne in 1940, she immediately joined the Musée de l'Homme resistance network and Défense de la France. Arrested by the Gestapo in July 1943, she was deported to the women's concentration camp at Ravensbrück, where Heinrich Himmler ordered her held in solitary confinement in the bunker.
Her memoir La Traversée de la nuit documented survival through solidarity. In 1958, meeting Father Joseph Wresinski at the Noisy-le-Grand shantytown, she dedicated her life to ATD Quart Monde, drafting France's historic 1998 Framework Law against social exclusion and becoming the first woman to receive the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.
