Archival Overview

First Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Armed Forces who led an epic seven-month guerrilla campaign carried on a litter through the Javanese jungle while suffering from severe tuberculosis.

Biographical Record

A former elementary schoolteacher and Muslim youth scout leader, Sudirman (1916–1950) was elected Commander-in-Chief of the young Indonesian military in November 1945. In December 1945, he won national renown by routing British and Dutch forces at the Battle of Ambarawa using encirclement tactics.

In December 1948, during Dutch Operation Kraai, the Dutch captured President Sukarno in Yogyakarta. Although suffering from advanced tuberculosis with only one functioning lung, Sudirman refused hospital confinement, commanding guerrilla resistance across Java from a bamboo litter carried by soldiers for seven months until the Dutch withdrew.
