Archival Overview
Forward-thinking Mamluk statesman and key ally of Khayr al-Din al-Tunisi, who served as the first modern mayor of Tunis, educational pioneer, and defender of Tunisian financial integrity against European encroachment.
Biographical Record
General Husayn was brought to Tunis as a youth and educated at the prestigious École Militaire du Bardo. He became one of the Regency's foremost intellectual reformers, mastering French, Italian, and Arabic, and collaborating closely with Grand Vizier Khayr al-Din.
As head of the Tunis municipal council (Majlis al-Baladiyya), he introduced modern public hygiene, street lighting, and administrative accountability. He later served on the International Financial Commission, fighting tenaciously to protect Tunisia from predatory foreign debt, before retiring to Italy following the French protectorate.
