Biographical Record
Gebre Kristos Desta was born in 1932 in Harar, the son of a graphic artist and calligrapher to Ras Makonnen. Abandoning agricultural studies to pursue his artistic passion, he earned a four-year scholarship to the Academy of Fine Arts in Cologne, Germany, graduating at the top of his class.
Returning to Addis Ababa in 1962, Desta taught at the Fine Arts School, introducing explosive brushwork, textured forms, and non-representational abstractions that initially shocked traditionalists before winning acclaim. Also a sensitive modernist poet, his verses mirrored the existential depths of his canvases. Fleeing the Derg's terror in 1978, he settled in the United States, where he died in 1981.
