Archival Overview
Revered national poet of Quebec and co-founder of Éditions de l'Hexagone, whose seminal 1970 poetry collection L'homme rapaillé became the poetic manifesto of Quebec identity.
Biographical Record
Moving to Montreal in 1947, Miron co-founded the historic publishing house Éditions de l'Hexagone in 1953, creating an independent platform for modern Quebec literature. A fiery orator with a bushy beard and passionate voice, he recited his poems in coffee houses and public demonstrations.
His magnum opus, L'homme rapaillé (The Patchwork Man, 1970), captured the alienation, longing for sovereignty, and visceral beauty of the Quebec land, selling over 100,000 copies. At his death in 1996, the Quebec National Assembly accorded him an official state funeral, the first ever for a poet.
