One of the greatest Manikongos (Kings) of Kongo, who formed a strategic military alliance with the Dutch West India Company and Queen Nzinga to resist Portuguese encroachment.
Biographical Record
Garcia II (c. 1615–1660) of the House of Kinlaza ascended the throne in 1641. Recognizing Portuguese designs to seize Kongo's copper and slave resources, he forged a bold military coalition with the Dutch, who had captured Luanda, and Queen Nzinga of Ndongo-Matamba.
Garcia II defended Kongo's territorial sovereignty, patronized Capuchin missionary schools to promote indigenous literacy, and fiercely resisted Portuguese demands for control of Kongo's mineral mines, presiding over the last golden age of the unified Kingdom of Kongo.
