Biographical Record
Gara Garayev was born on February 5, 1918, in Baku into a distinguished physician's family. Studying at the Moscow State Conservatory under Dmitri Shostakovich, Garayev developed a profound mastery of twentieth-century polyphony, 12-tone serialism, and Azerbaijani modal intonations.
His 1952 ballet Seven Beauties, based on Nizami Ganjavi's epic poem, and his 1958 ballet The Path of Thunder established him as a premier symphonist of the Soviet era. Heading the Azerbaijan Composers' Union for decades and mentoring scores of prominent composers, his music was championed by conductors such as Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
