First recorded supreme leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest autonomous fugitive slave community in colonial Brazil.

Biographical Record

Ganga Zumba, believed to have been of Kongolese royal descent, escaped Portuguese enslavement in colonial Pernambuco and rose to supreme leadership of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a confederation of fortified settlements inhabited by thousands of free Africans and Indigenous allies.

Under his reign, Palmares successfully repelled numerous Portuguese military expeditions. In 1678, he negotiated a conditional peace treaty with the Portuguese governor, a controversial pact that led to internal division and his eventual poisoning, after which his nephew Zumbi took leadership.
