Archival Overview

Revered military commander and civil official of the Goryeo Kingdom of Korea who defeated the Khitan Liao Empire's massive invasion at the Battle of Guju in 1019 at age seventy-one.

Biographical Record

Passing the civil service examination with top honors in 983, Gang Gam-chan (948–1031) rose through civil administration. In 1018, when the powerful Khitan Liao Empire invaded Goryeo with 100,000 elite horsemen under General Xiao Paiya, King Hyeonjong appointed seventy-year-old Gang Gam-chan as Supreme Commander of 200,000 Goryeo troops.

At Heunghwamjin, Gang dammed a river with bull hides, releasing a torrent that swept away the Khitan vanguard. In 1019, when the retreating Liao army made a stand at Guju, Gang engaged them during a sudden fierce windstorm, launching a flanking cavalry charge that annihilated the Khitan army, securing peace for a century.
