"If I succeed in defeating Nusantara, only then will I enjoy palapa (pleasure). Until Gurun, Seram, Tanjungpura, Haru, Pahang, Dompo, Bali, Sunda, Palembang, Tumasik are united, I will not taste spice."

Archival Overview

Legendary prime minister (Mahapatih) of the Majapahit Empire who took the famous Sumpah Palapa (Palapa Oath) in 1336, vowing to taste no earthly pleasures until unifying the Nusantara archipelago.

Biographical Record

Gajah Mada ('The Angry Elephant') rose from royal bodyguard commander (Bhayangkari) by saving King Jayanegara from the Kuti rebellion in 1319. Appointed Mahapatih under Queen Tribhuwana Vijayatungadewi in 1336, he stood before the royal court and swore the immortal 'Sumpah Palapa'.

He vowed not to consume spices or enjoy worldly luxuries until he united Nusantara—including Bali, Sunda, Palembang, Tumasik (Singapore), and Maluku. Over three decades, his naval fleets and armies made Majapahit the supreme maritime empire of Southeast Asia. His oath remains Indonesia's national motto for unity.
