Biographical Record
Born in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, Roy taught school before moving to Europe to study drama. Returning to Canada on the eve of World War II, she settled in Montreal as a journalist, closely observing the impoverished working-class conditions of the Saint-Henri neighbourhood.
In 1945, Roy published Bonheur d'occasion, an unprecedented, compassionate portrait of urban poverty during wartime that won international acclaim and France's Prix Fémina. A three-time Governor General's Award winner and Companion of the Order of Canada, her later works beautifully captured prairie pioneer life.
