Archival Overview

First Latin American author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1945), Chilean poet, educator, and diplomat renowned for Desolación, Ternura, and maternal lyricism.

Biographical Record

Gabriela Mistral (pseudonym of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, 1889–1957) was a Chilean poet, educator, and diplomat from the mountainous Elqui Valley who became the first Latin American writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. Starting as an impoverished rural schoolteacher at fifteen, she advocated passionately for public schooling, literacy, and the rights of children and indigenous peoples.

Mistral achieved national recognition with her passionate Sonetos de la muerte (1914) following the suicide of her first love. Her collections Desolación (1922), Ternura (1924), and Tala (1938) fused raw emotional grief with tender maternal cradle songs (rondas) and defense of Latin American cultural solidarity. As a diplomat, she represented Chile across Europe and the Americas and served on the committee that drafted the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
