Archival Overview
Influential French political philosopher and historian, elder brother of Condillac, whose communal egalitarian critiques of private property and defense of popular sovereignty deeply influenced the French Revolution.
Biographical Record
Educated by Jesuits in Lyon and Saint-Sulpice in Paris, Mably served in the diplomatic service under Cardinal de Tencin before withdrawing to dedicate his life to republican history and moral philosophy.
In works including Observations sur l'histoire de France (1765) and De la législation (1776), Mably attacked commercial greed and landed inequality, arguing that natural equality requires limiting private property and elevating public civic virtue. His writings were revered by Saint-Just, Babeuf, and the Jacobin leaders.
