Archival Overview

Intrepid early cinematographer trained by the Lumière brothers who introduced moving picture cinema to Mexico, Cuba, Canada, Indochina, and served as court photographer to the Sultan of Morocco.

Biographical Record

Graduating in pharmacy from the University of Lyon, Veyre was recruited by Auguste and Louis Lumière in 1896 as an itinerant cinematographer. Traveling to Latin America, he shot the first motion pictures in Mexico and screened films for Mexican President Porfirio Díaz.

Between 1898 and 1900, he filmed early cinematic footage across Vietnam, China, and Japan. In 1901, Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz of Morocco hired Veyre as his personal court instructor in photography and cinema in Fez, capturing unprecedented photographic records of pre-protectorate Moroccan palace life and desert tribes.
