Archival Overview
Titan of German Idealism whose dialectical system traced the historical evolution of Absolute Spirit through thesis, antithesis, and synthesis in The Phenomenology of Spirit.
Biographical Record
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) completed his breakthrough masterwork, 'The Phenomenology of Spirit' ('Phanomenologie des Geistes'), in 1806 as Napoleon's cannon thundered at the Battle of Jena. Hegel presented reality as Spirit (Geist) becoming self-conscious through history.
His dialectical method analyzed history as an evolutionary struggle toward freedom, famously illustrated by the Master-Slave dialectic. At the University of Berlin, Hegel dominated German intellectual life, systematizing logic, political philosophy ('Philosophy of Right'), aesthetics, and the philosophy of history.
