Bishop of Ruspe (near Sfax), recognized as the greatest North African Latin theologian of the 6th century, twice exiled to Sardinia by Vandal kings for defending orthodox Trinitarian theology.
Biographical Record
Fabius Claudius Gordianus Fulgentius was born into a senatorial family in Telepte (western Tunisia). Educated in Greek and Latin literature, he served as provincial procurator before renouncing secular power to embrace monastic life.
Consecrated Bishop of Ruspe (modern Henchir-Rosfa, near Sfax) in 502 AD, he was banished to Sardinia by the Arian Vandal king Thrasamund. In exile, Fulgentius acted as the intellectual voice of the African church, penning masterly theological treatises that influenced the Council of Orange (529 AD) and earned him the title 'The Pocket Augustine'.
