"The cassock of the priest and the mantle of the magistrate are identical: both exist to serve human souls."

Archival Overview

First President of the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville) known as 'Abbé Youlou', an ordained Roman Catholic priest who wore his soutane cassock in presidential office.

Biographical Record

Ordained a Catholic priest in 1946, Fulbert Youlou (1917–1972) entered politics in 1956, founding the Democratic Union for the Defense of African Interests (UDDIA) and becoming the first African mayor of Brazzaville. In 1960, he led the Republic of the Congo to independence.

Youlou famously wore a white Christian soutane custom-tailored by Christian Dior in Paris. An ardent pro-Western anti-communist, he hosted the historic 1960 Brazzaville conference of moderate African heads of state. He was forced to resign during the 'Trois Glorieuses' popular trade union uprising in August 1963.
