Fritz Walter debuted for 1. FC Kaiserslautern at seventeen and scored thirty goals in sixty-one international appearances. During World War II, he was drafted and captured as a Soviet prisoner of war, narrowly escaping deportation to Siberia when a Hungarian guard recognized him from a football match.
As team captain in 1954, Walter led West Germany to a 3-2 comeback upset over the seemingly invincible 'Mighty Magyars' of Hungary in the World Cup final in Bern. The victory was celebrated as the psychological founding moment of modern democratic West Germany.
