Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828) lived in the vibrant musical shadow of Beethoven in Vienna. Modest, Bohemian, and beloved by a tight circle of poet and painter friends who gathered for private musical salons known as 'Schubertiades', Schubert composed with astonishing, torrential speed throughout his brief thirty-one years of life.

Schubert elevated the German art song (*Lied*) into an immortal genre, composing over 600 songs setting Goethe, Schiller, and Müller, including the chilling Erlkönig and the haunting song cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise (Winter Journey).
