Archival Overview

Universally honored as Austria's national dramatist, whose tragic plays ('The Ancestress', 'Sappho', 'King Ottokar') bridged Weimar classicism and Austrian Habsburg historical drama.

Biographical Record

Franz Grillparzer was born on January 15, 1791, in Vienna. Serving as Director of the Imperial Archives while writing in secret, Grillparzer struggled against the suffocating censorship of Metternich's police state, crafting poetic tragedies of profound emotional depth and historical grandeur.

His 1825 masterpiece König Ottokars Glück und Ende celebrated the foundation of the Habsburg realm by Rudolf I and contained his famous panegyric to the Austrian landscape ('It is a good country...'). In 1827, Grillparzer wrote the famous funeral oration for Ludwig van Beethoven. Upon his death in 1872 at age 81, Vienna gave him a monumental state funeral.
