Biographical Record
František Kupka was born in Opočno on September 23, 1871. After academic art training in Prague and Vienna, Kupka moved to Paris in 1896, working as an anarchist illustrator and studying occult philosophies, physiology, and optics.
In 1912, Kupka stunned the Paris Salon d'Automne with Amorpha, Fugue in Two Colors, one of the very first fully abstract paintings in art history, translating musical counterpoint into interlocking circular color rhythms. His pioneering exploration of pure chromatic energy laid the foundations for Orphism and geometric abstraction.
