Biographical Record
Trained under Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Hendrick van Balen in Antwerp, Snyders visited Italy before joining Antwerp's Guild of Saint Luke in 1602. He pioneered specialized animalier painting, capturing the anatomy and fierce kinetic energy of predators and hounds.
His partnership with Rubens was legendary: Snyders painted ferocious wild animals, birds, and game in Rubens' heroic hunting canvases, including Prometheus Bound and The Wolf and Fox Hunt. He was appointed official painter to Archduke Albert and Isabella.
