"The northern bush in winter is a tapestry of crystal fire; every birch trunk is a flute of silver light."

Archival Overview

Founding member of the Group of Seven whose decorative mastery of Algoma northern light and winter woodlands created enduring Canadian landscapes.

Biographical Record

Francis Hans "Franz" Johnston was a founding member of the iconic Group of Seven in 1920. Having worked as a commercial designer at Grip Ltd. alongside J.E.H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Arthur Lismer, Johnston joined the historic boxcar painting expeditions into Ontario's Algoma wilderness in 1918 and 1919.

His works, characterized by brilliant sunlight filtering through birch branches and sparkling snowdrifts, were among the most commercially successful of the early Group exhibitions. Johnston subsequently served as principal of the Winnipeg School of Art before establishing his own summer art school in the Georgian Bay region.
