Biographical Record
Francois Tombalbaye was born on June 15, 1918, in Bessada, southern Chad, of Sara parentage. Trained as a primary school teacher, he became an active trade unionist and leader of the Chadian Progressive Party (PPT-RDA).
Elected Prime Minister in 1959, Tombalbaye officially proclaimed Chad's independence on August 11, 1960, becoming its first President.
