Archival Overview

Legendary Maroon guerrilla leader and herbalist in Saint-Domingue whose underground network of escaped slaves and botanical poisons terrorized French plantation owners for six years, inspiring the Haitian Revolution.

Biographical Record

Francois Mackandal (c. 1730–1758) was an enslaved African from the Kongo or Senegambia who lost his left hand in a sugarcane press before escaping into the rugged mountain forests of northern Saint-Domingue in 1751. Renowned for profound knowledge of Caribbean botanical poisons and spiritual charisma, he organized a clandestine maroon confederation.

Mackandal constructed a network of enslaved plantation cooks and domestics, systematically poisoning the food, livestock, and wine of cruel French slaveowners, killing an estimated 6,000 colonialists. Captured through betrayal and condemned to burn at the stake in 1758, his legendary escape from the burning scaffold immortalized him as an invincible spirit of Haitian liberation.
