Archival Overview
Brussels-born sculptor known in Rome as 'Il Fiammingo', who worked alongside Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Nicolas Poussin, championing an elegant classical ideal of marble sculpture.
Biographical Record
Son of Jerome Duquesnoy the Elder, François received a bursary from Archduke Albert to study in Rome in 1618. Sharing lodgings with Nicolas Poussin, he rejected excessive Baroque theatricality in favor of ancient Greek grace and classical harmony.
His colossal marble Saint Andrew in one of the four crossing piers of St. Peter's Basilica and his serene Saint Susanna in Santa Maria di Loreto established him as Rome's greatest sculptor after Bernini. He was also universally celebrated for his lifelike marble putti and relief medallions.
